Adventures of Learning a Language – Part 7

July 7, 2009 · 3 Comments

Have you ever heard a word or saying that you swear you have never heard before and then all of a sudden you find yourself hearing it all the time?

Well, that’s exactly what happened to me with a certain Italian phrase that seems to be popping up all over the place since I first heard it.

The phrase I am referring to is…

“Un sacco di <insert Italian noun here>”

Literally translated it means “A bag/sack of” and it is basically the equivalent to the English way of saying “plenty of”,“tons of” or “heaps of”.

In order to complete the saying, you must tack a noun to the end of it.  Below are some nouns that you might hear used with the saying, “un sacco di…”.  Take note, that the noun should be plural unless you are using an uncountable noun (such as money or time).

tempo – time
persone – people
parole – words
cose – things
domande – questions
soldi – money
errori – errors

The list goes on and on.  You can pretty much add any noun to the phrase “un sacco di..” in order to stress the fact that there is/are alot.

Have you heard this Italian phrase in passing, in conversation, or in any other context?

Happy Canada Day!

July 1, 2009 · 1 Comment

Today is Canada’s birthday! She is a young 142 years old today.

This year’s Canada Day is a bit different then most.  Firstly, it falls on a Wednesday, so for some that means no long weekend in July.  Secondly, there are currently 30,000 civic employees on strike.  Toronto is currently on Day 10 of the strike which means no garbage pick-up and many parks, and public day camps have been shut down.  This has also lead to the cancellation of some city-run Canada Day events.  Bummer, I know.

But, don’t let the pile of stinky trash get you down just yet.  There are still alot of places all over the GTA and surrounding areas that are still going to light up the sky with Canada Day fireworks.

Some of these places include:

Canada’s Wonderland (Vaughan)
Centennial Park (Etobicoke)
Downsview Park (Toronto)
Chinguacousy Park (Brampton)

There is also the spectacular fireworks for the Ontario Place Festival of Fire that is still going on tonight @ 10:30pm. For those who make the CHIN International Picnic at the CNE Exhibition grounds a yearly visit, you can rest assured, the picnic is still on – rain or shine.

So, make the most of this midweek day off and spend time with friends, family and other loved ones.

Happy Canada Day to all the Canadians near and far! :)
